Udupi, Sep 8: A newborn baby boy was found abandoned in a lane near a roadside at Hoode under the jurisdiction of Malpe police station on Sunday, September 7. The baby, who had sustained serious injuries, died despite treatment.
Abdul Shukoor of Hoode reportedly stepped out of his house when he noticed a newborn baby boy lying face down without any clothes in the lane beside his house. No guardian or family member of the baby was found at the spot.
He immediately informed his neighbours, and when they checked on the baby, they found that it was alive. The baby had an injury on its face and was bleeding from the mouth. The child was immediately shifted to the Udupi Mother & Child Hospital and admitted for treatment.
However, the baby was in a critical condition and died despite treatment, doctors said. The body has been kept at the mortuary of the district hospital in Ajjarkad.
A case has been registered at the Malpe police station, and an investigation is underway.
It is suspected that the baby was born only a day earlier. District Child Protection Unit official Suraksha said the baby died due to an injury in its mouth that resulted in bleeding.
Udupi district superintendent of police Hariram Shankar said, “There is a possibility that the newborn was abandoned by migrant workers from North India. CCTV footage from the surrounding areas is being examined. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway.”
