Bantwal, Jul 28: Eleven days after he was admitted to a hospital, the Bantwal town police on Monday took Chetan, the prime accused in the murder of a young woman at the B C Road KSRTC bus stand, into custody following an improvement in his health condition.

Lavanya, a resident of Kakyapadavu, was hacked to death with a lethal weapon by Chetan, a resident of Odilnala in Beltangady, on July 16. A case regarding the murder was registered at the Bantwal rural police station.

Following the gruesome crime, Chetan fled the scene in a car. The police managed to apprehend him in Mangaluru the very next day. However, suspecting that he had consumed rat poison in an apparent suicide bid, the police admitted him to the Bantwal government hospital for primary care. On the advice of the doctors, he was subsequently shifted to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru for advanced medical treatment.

Initially treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Wenlock Hospital, Chetan was moved to the general ward after his health showed signs of recovery.

With his condition now stable, the accused is currently in the custody of the Bantwal town police. Chethan was produced before the court which remanded him into police custody for four days. The investigation into the murder case is being led by Bantwal town police inspector Ananthapadmanabha, under the guidance of assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Yash Kumar Sharma.
