Mangaluru: Worker arrested within 24 hours for stealing gold valuables worth Rs 6.37 lac

Mangaluru, Jul 21: The Mangaluru Rural police have cracked a theft case within 24 hours by arresting a construction worker who stole gold ornaments and a watch worth Rs 6.37 lac from a house in Maryhill. The police have also successfully recovered all the stolen valuables from his possession.

The arrested accused has been identified as Zaheeruddin (24), son of Nirajuddin, a native of Balrampur district in Uttar Pradesh, currently residing on Azizuddin Road in Bunder, Mangaluru.

The theft took place at a house in Bandot, Maryhill, where roof replacement and false ceiling works were being carried out by a contractor and workers recently. During this period, the accused managed to steal valuables kept in a small purse inside a table drawer in one of the rooms. The stolen items included a 20-gram gold bangle, a 17-gram gold chain, an 8-gram gold ring, a 4-gram gold ring, and a Sonata gold-coated watch, altogether valued at Rs 6,37,000. Following a complaint, a case was registered at the Mangaluru Rural police station under Crime No 68/2026 and section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Taking up the investigation, the police thoroughly interrogated the workers who were hired for the house renovation. During questioning, Zaheeruddin confessed to the crime. The police subsequently recovered the 49 grams of stolen gold jewellery and the watch. The accused was later produced before the court, which remanded him to judicial custody.

The swift operation was carried out under the guidance of the Mangaluru city police commissioner. Mangaluru Rural police inspector D R Manjappa, police sub-inspector Arun Kumar D, and their team cracked the case and recovered the stolen goods within 24 hours of taking up the investigation.
