Beltangady: Police arrest habitual offender in Shaktinagar theft case, seize 550 kg aluminium wire

Beltangady, Jul 16: The police have arrested a 36-year-old man in connection with a theft case at an industrial premises in Shaktinagar, Kuvettu, in which his alleged accomplice died accidentally during the commission of the crime. Police have also recovered 550 kg of stolen aluminium wire from the accused.

An Unnatural Death Report (UDR No. 35/2026) was initially registered at the Beltangady police station on July 1 under Section 194(3)(iv) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following the death of Mustaq.

During the investigation, police found evidence indicating that a theft had taken place at the spot where Mustaq was found dead. Based on these findings, a separate case (Crime No. 73/2026) was registered at the Beltangady police station under Sections 331(4), 305 read with 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

As part of the investigation, Beltangady police arrested P Ibrahim Latheef (36), a resident of Kashipatna in Beltangady taluk, on July 14.

During interrogation, Ibrahim Latheef allegedly revealed that he, the deceased Mustaq, and another accused had trespassed into the premises of an establishment at Shaktinagar in Kuvettu on the night of June 30 and stolen aluminium and iron materials. During the theft, Mustaq's neck reportedly became entangled in an iron wire, leading to his accidental death.

Police have recovered a total of 550 kg of stolen aluminium wire from the accused.

Further investigation revealed that Ibrahim Latheef is allegedly involved in 16 theft cases registered at Venoor, Uppinangady, Arehalli, and Shivamogga Rural police stations, among others, police said.
