Mangaluru, Jul 14: While many slow down with age, 84-year-old Molly D'Souza continues to inspire generations with her unwavering spirit and love for farming. A resident of Addabare in Bajpe, she can still be seen wielding a sickle and working tirelessly in her fields, proving that passion knows no age.

For the past 64 years, Molly has dedicated her life to agriculture, turning every challenge into an opportunity. Be it unpredictable weather, fluctuating market prices, or the constant threat of wild animals damaging crops, she has faced every obstacle with remarkable courage and determination.

This season alone, she has cultivated a rich variety of vegetables across four acres of land, including lady's finger (okra), ridge gourd, bitter gourd, cucumber, sweet potato, Malabar spinach, pumpkin, and several other local varieties. Her lush fields stand as a testimony to years of hard work, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the soil.

Behind this inspiring success story lies a life marked by hardship and extraordinary perseverance. Molly got married to Louis of Addabare at the age of 17. However, tragedy struck early when she lost her husband when she was just 31, leaving her with the immense responsibility of raising four young children on her own.

Instead of giving up, she chose to fight back through farming. Relying solely on vegetable cultivation, she not only provided for her family but also educated her children and ensured they settled well in life. Today, her eldest son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren proudly stand beside her, continuing the family's farming tradition.

Molly's day begins before sunrise. By 6 am, she is in her vegetable garden harvesting fresh produce. Her locally grown vegetables enjoy strong demand in the market, with traders arriving at her doorstep in auto-rickshaws by around 8:30 am to purchase the day's harvest. After taking a short break during the afternoon heat, she returns to her fields in the evening, continuing the work she loves with the same enthusiasm that has defined her life for decades.

At a time when many young people view agriculture as an unprofitable profession, Molly D’Souza's life offers a powerful message of hope, dignity, and perseverance. Her story is a reminder that success is not determined by age, but by dedication, resilience, and an unwavering belief in one's work. With hands weathered by years of labour and a heart deeply rooted in the soil, Molly D'Souza continues to cultivate not just vegetables, but inspiration for an entire generation.
