Trump says Iran sanctions relief could be linked to purchases of US farm products

Washington, Jun 23: US President Donald Trump said any future sanctions relief granted to Iran would be tied to the purchase of American agricultural products, while reiterating that Tehran would never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon under a potential agreement currently being negotiated between the two countries.

Speaking at the White House after signing executive orders related to quantum technology, Trump offered an update on ongoing talks between US and Iranian officials, describing the negotiations as constructive and expressing optimism about reaching a deal.

"We have an open strait and we have a country that will never have a nuclear weapon, will never, ever have a nuclear weapon," Trump said.

His comments came as Vice President JD Vance and a US delegation continued discussions with Iranian representatives in Switzerland. The negotiations have reportedly focused on Iran's nuclear programme, maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional stability.

Trump said the administration was exploring sanctions relief measures but stressed that any unfrozen funds would be earmarked for humanitarian purchases, specifically agricultural products sourced from American farmers.

"One of the things that we are doing also, and it came up last night, is money that's being unfrozen is going to be used to buy food," he said. "And the food's going to be bought exclusively through the United States from our farmers."

He added that products such as corn and soybeans would be included in those purchases.

Responding to concerns that sanctions relief could enable Iran to strengthen its military capabilities, Trump said safeguards would ensure that the funds are used solely for civilian needs.

"They're supposed to use money to buy food for their people, because right now their people are very hungry," he said.

The US President expressed confidence that the talks were progressing positively.

"We're doing very well in terms of negotiating a fair and reasonable deal," he said.

At the same time, he warned that Washington would act if Iran failed to comply with any eventual agreement.

"If Iran doesn't live up to their agreement or if they're not behaving, I will do what I have to do," Trump said.

Trump also dismissed suggestions that Tehran had gained leverage during the negotiations, arguing that recent military developments had severely weakened Iran.

"Their navy is gone. Their air force is gone. Their leaders are all dead. Their whole country is a mess. Their economy is shot," he said.

He praised Vice President JD Vance for his role in the diplomatic effort, saying he had performed exceptionally well during the talks.

"I think that they're doing a fantastic job. I watched his news conference from Switzerland. He's a very smart guy. He did a great job," Trump said.

The President further claimed that shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz had returned to normal after recent tensions in the region.

"We took in more oil yesterday than has ever gone through the strait. The strait is totally open," he said.

The negotiations are being closely watched internationally, as any agreement could have significant implications for regional security, global energy markets and the future of Iran's nuclear programme.
