Mangaluru, Jun 13: KMC Hospital, Mangaluru, organised a special awareness session titled “Caring for Those Who Cared for Us”, focusing on elderly care, emergency preparedness and recognising early signs of health complications among senior citizens.

The session aimed to educate families and caregivers on identifying emergency situations in older adults and responding with timely and compassionate care. The programme featured expert talks by specialist doctors, live demonstrations, medication guidance and awareness resources to improve elderly healthcare practices.

Speaking at the session, Dr Shivanand Pai explained the importance of recognising symptoms related to dementia and other neurological conditions. He noted that memory loss is one of the key signs of dementia, along with difficulties in daily activities such as handling money, calculations and navigation.

Dr Pai further explained that while conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and many forms of dementia may not be completely curable, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help control symptoms and slow disease progression. He added that certain dementia-like conditions caused by vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid problems or subdural haematoma can be reversible if identified and treated promptly.

He also stressed that dementia care requires a multidisciplinary approach involving doctors, therapists, caregivers and family members to ensure a better quality of life for patients.

The session further focused on key emergency care topics, including chest pain, falls, confusion, medication safety and emergency response among elderly individuals.

Dr Jeedhu Radhakrishnan shared insights on emergency preparedness and emphasised the importance of swift action during critical situations involving senior citizens.

The programme was welcomed by Pramod Kunder, Cluster Director, who highlighted the hospital’s commitment to community health awareness and patient care.

The event was compered by Kirthika, who coordinated the proceedings smoothly.

The awareness programme was held at Tower 2, KMC Hospital, Dr B R Ambedkar Circle, Mangaluru, with the objective of empowering families to provide safer and more informed care for elderly members.

The session concluded with the key message: “Protect our elders. Be prepared, because every second counts.”
