Washington, May 29: Fourteen-year-old Indian-American student Shrey Parikh has won the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee, creating history by correctly spelling 32 words in the final spell-off round and setting a new competition record.
The eighth-grade student from San Bernardino, California, clinched the prestigious title after accurately spelling “bromocriptine” — a term described by competition organisers as a dopamine-mimicking polypeptide alkaloid derived from ergot.

Representing the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, Parikh emerged victorious in only the third spell-off conducted in the history of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. His tally of 32 correctly spelled words established a new benchmark in the competition’s tie-break format.
Parikh studies at Day Creek Intermediate School in California and entered this year’s contest with significant national-level experience.
According to his official Scripps National Spelling Bee profile, he first competed in the national championship in 2022, where he finished tied for 89th place. He returned in 2024 and secured a tie for third place before finally capturing the championship title this year.
His victory marks the culmination of years of dedication and preparation.
Beyond spelling competitions, Parikh has a wide range of academic and extracurricular interests. His biography highlights his enthusiasm for tennis, mathematics, reading, and chess.
He is also an accomplished percussionist in his school band and plays several instruments, including the snare drum, bass drum, timpani, toms, triangle, glockenspiel, and marimba.
According to organisers, Parikh spends much of his free time solving mathematics problems and enjoying time with his siblings. One of his proudest recent accomplishments was qualifying for the California state Mathcounts competition.
The young champion also shares a strong connection with India. His biography notes that he enjoys travelling and especially values visiting India to spend time with his grandparents.
Founded in 1925, the Scripps National Spelling Bee is considered one of the most prestigious academic competitions in the United States. The annual contest brings together top young spellers from across America and international regions after they qualify through local and regional competitions.
The competition tests spelling ability, vocabulary knowledge, and language skills through multiple rounds featuring increasingly complex words. Participants must generally be under the age of 15 and not beyond the eighth grade.
Students of Indian origin have dominated the competition for more than two decades, winning a significant number of national titles and consistently excelling in the final rounds. Their remarkable success has made the event especially popular within Indian-American communities across the United States.
With this victory, Shrey Parikh joins the distinguished list of Scripps National Spelling Bee champions and adds another memorable chapter to the competition’s long-standing tradition of academic excellence.
