Trump says US will not rush Iran peace negotiations

Washington, May 24: US President Donald Trump on Sunday said American negotiators would not rush ongoing discussions with Iran aimed at ending the West Asia conflict, asserting that “time is on our side.”

Trump’s remarks came a day after he indicated that a broad agreement with Tehran was close to being finalised.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the blockade against Iran would remain in place until a formal agreement was reached and signed.

“The blockade will remain in full force and effect until an agreement is reached, certified, and signed. Both sides must take their time and get it right,” he wrote.

“There can be no mistakes. Our relationship with Iran is becoming a much more professional and productive one,” Trump added.

The US President also reiterated Washington’s position that Iran must not be allowed to develop or acquire nuclear weapons.

“They must understand, however, that they cannot develop or procure a nuclear weapon or bomb,” he stated.

Trump further thanked Middle Eastern countries for their support and cooperation during the diplomatic efforts.

The developments come amid intensified negotiations between the US and Iran following months of regional tensions involving the Strait of Hormuz, oil shipments and military escalation across West Asia.

Recent reports have suggested that the proposed framework under discussion includes sanctions relief, de-escalation measures and renewed talks over Iran’s nuclear programme.

However, Iranian officials have maintained that Tehran will not give up its right to peaceful nuclear activities.
