Railways to soon float tenders for Rs 3,300-crore Mangaluru–Sringeri–Shivamogga line

Mangaluru, May 24: Union Minister of State for Railways V Somanna on Saturday said that the Railways will shortly invite tenders for the proposed Mangaluru-Sringeri-Shivamogga railway line project, estimated to cost around Rs 3,300 crore.

Speaking to reporters after reviewing development works at Mangaluru Junction railway station under the Amrit Bharat scheme, the minister said the Final Location Survey (FLS) for the 332-km railway project has already been completed.

He said the proposed railway line is expected to improve connectivity between coastal Karnataka, Malnad and interior parts of the state, besides supporting economic and tourism growth in the region.

Somanna also said that a feasibility study is under way for establishing a railway station near Mangaluru International Airport to improve travel convenience for passengers.

On the Hassan-Mangaluru railway line doubling project, the minister stated that alignment fixation and preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) are currently being examined.

The survey work for laying third and fourth railway lines between Shoranur and Mangaluru has also been completed and the project is expected to be taken up in the near future, he added.

Replying to queries regarding the proposed railway crossing at Arebetta on the Subrahmanya Road-Sakleshpura Ghat stretch, Somanna said the land in the area is not suitable for such construction and a fresh proposal would be sought.

Highlighting railway investments in Karnataka, the minister said railway projects worth nearly Rs 52,000 crore are currently in progress across the state, including 14 new railway projects.

“Karnataka is an important state for the Union government and priority is being given to railway infrastructure and connectivity projects across the state,” Somanna said.

Our Mangalore railway station should be upgraded under railway redevelopment projects: Multi-level parking buildings to reduce congestion Fully air-conditioned terminals and waiting areas Integrated shopping complexes and food courts Multiplex or entertainment zones for travelers and locals Budget lodges and premium stay options Short-stay “fresh-up” rooms for transit passengers Better cleanliness, digital displays, escalators, and accessibility Stations such as Gandhinagar Capital railway station and Rani Kamalapati railway station show how railway stations can become modern city hubs instead of just transit points. For Mangaluru specifically, there’s enough land and passenger traffic to justify: A commercial transit hub model Public-private partnership development Integration with buses, taxis, and future urban transport Coastal tourism branding with local cuisine and culture Many citizens feel development discussions get overshadowed by political arguments instead of long-term urban planning. Constructive public pressure — through civic groups, local media, chambers of commerce, and railway user associations — often helps push such projects higher on the priority list. But unfortunately our railways stations come under Kerala No MP Or MLA from our DK Or Udupi can still bring this under Mangalore. Really surprising

There is already a Railway station JOKATEE constructed near Airport and a few kilometers away, one more station TOKUR is constructed. Jokatte station, despite being commissioned back in 2017 and situated just about 4 km from Mangaluru International airport., the public could not reap the benefit of the said station. Now, a feasibility study is underway for a new airport-proximate station (proposed along the line between Padil and the airport). For the proposed airport station to be genuinely viable and useful for public, it must be constructed on an ideal location so that passengers can access other parts of the city without any hassles.

Jokatte station will be an ideal location for accessing MIA. There is also need for a local train from Puttur to Byndoor for the benefit of distant passengers traveling to the airport.

I think the new line connecting Sringeri will be from Honnavar to Shivamogga, which was proposed a few years back.
