Mumbai, May 5: Mumbai Indians stayed firmly on course in a high-scoring chase against Lucknow Super Giants in their IPL 2026 clash at the Wankhede Stadium, powered by a record-breaking opening partnership.

At the time of writing, MI were 144/1 in 11 overs, needing 85 runs from 54 balls. Ryan Rickelton smashed a blistering 83 off just 32 balls before his dismissal, while Rohit Sharma remained unbeaten on 58 off 33 deliveries, with Tilak Varma joining him at the crease.

The highlight of the innings was a massive 143-run opening stand between Rohit and Rickelton, which laid a solid foundation for the chase and etched their names in the record books.

With this effort, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton became only the second pair in Mumbai Indians’ history to register three 100-plus partnerships in the IPL, underlining their growing importance at the top of the order this season.

Earlier, Lucknow Super Giants posted a formidable 228/5 in 20 overs, setting MI a daunting target that would require their highest successful chase in IPL history.

Rickelton set the tone early, smashing six fours and eight sixes at a strike rate exceeding 250, while Rohit anchored the innings with a composed knock, ensuring the scoreboard kept moving.

With momentum on their side and wickets in hand, Mumbai Indians appeared well placed to pull off a memorable chase.
