Udupi: Police seize 13 lorries in crackdown on illegal sand transport

Udupi, Apr 27: Police conducted a special operation in the district to curb illegal sand transportation and overloading, during which 13 lorries were seized.

During the operation, vehicles transporting sand in excess of the permitted limit and violating prescribed rules were stopped and inspected.

Keeping watch on roads, check-posts, and key routes, police detected and seized 13 vehicles that were transporting sand in violation of regulations.

During inspection, the vehicles were found to be involved in overloading of sand, lack of required documents, and licence violations.

All the seized vehicles have been handed over to the department of mines and geology for legal action against the owners. Officials of the department will initiate fines and other proceedings under the relevant laws.

Vehicle owners and drivers were also issued strict instructions on the importance of complying with regulations.

The operation was carried out on April 25 as per the directions of the deputy commissioner and the police department. Personnel from various police stations in the district, traffic police, and concerned officials took part in the drive.
