Mobile phone cheating allegations rock Chandrapur exam centre

Chandrapur, Apr 23: Allegations of large-scale cheating using mobile phones have surfaced at an examination centre in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district, after videos purportedly showing students accessing answers on their phones during a B.A. Civil Services examination went viral on social media.

The incident was reported from Sarvodaya College in Mul, affiliated to Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University, where the examination was held on April 22.

According to allegations made by protesting students, some candidates were allegedly allowed to carry mobile phones into the examination hall after paying Rs 300, raising serious questions over the conduct of the examination despite claims of a “copy-free” campaign.

Videos circulating online purportedly show students openly using mobile phones inside the examination hall.

The allegations have sparked outrage particularly because the examination involved Civil Services students, with critics questioning the integrity of a system meant to prepare future administrators.

Students also raised concerns over poor infrastructure at the centre, claiming nearly 400 candidates were appearing for examinations under cramped conditions, with three students seated on a single bench and some reportedly forced to sit on the floor due to lack of space.

Allegations were also made about the absence of basic facilities, including toilets.

Some students protesting outside the centre accused the college administration of collecting money from candidates in exchange for allowing use of mobile phones during the examination.

Those who allegedly refused to pay and wanted to write the exam fairly were said to have brought the matter to light.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the allegations. The incident has triggered demands for an inquiry into the conduct of the examination and the role of officials at the centre.
