Sreeshankar opens season with 8.15m win at Indian Athletics Series

Bengaluru, Apr 5: Murali Sreeshankar made a strong start to his season by winning the men’s long jump at the Indian Athletics Series, registering a best effort of 8.15m at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium.

The 27-year-old achieved his top jump on the fourth attempt and was the only athlete to breach both the 8.00m mark and the Asian Games qualifying standard of 7.91m.

In the men’s triple jump, Abdulla Aboobacker clinched first place with a leap of 16.82m, while Sarvesh Kushare topped the men’s high jump with a clearance of 2.23m.

Among other performances, Baranica Elangovan impressed in the women’s pole vault. Ancy Sojan edged past Shaili Singh by two centimetres to win the women’s long jump title.

In the men’s javelin throw, Bibin Antony secured top honours with a best throw of 77.53m.

The series will next move to Udaipur before heading to Sangrur and Ranchi for subsequent rounds.
