Karkala, Mar 29: A 56-year-old scooter rider was killed on the spot in a fresh accident near Sanoor Rama Mandira on National Highway 169, where locals allege unscientific road works and the absence of a service road have led to a series of mishaps.

The deceased has been identified as Kervashe Jayananda Shetty, 56, owner of Shambhavi Stores in Sanoor.

The accident occurred at around 9:30 am when Shetty was attempting to cross the road divider near Nitte. A speeding goods tempo rammed into his scooter, causing severe head injuries. The impact proved fatal, and he died at the scene.

He is survived by his wife and two sons. A case has been registered at the Karkala Town police station.

The stretch has witnessed repeated accidents in recent days. On March 18, a day ahead of Ugadi, a man identified as Harish Suvarna was killed after his bike met with an accident at the same spot. With two fatalities reported within just 11 days, concern is growing among residents.

Locals have expressed anger over the alleged unscientific highway works and the lack of a proper service road, blaming the authorities for failing to address the dangerous conditions at the accident-prone stretch.
