“Matka King” teaser drops on Vijay Varma’s birthday, series set for April release

Mumbai, Mar 29: Marking the birthday of actor Vijay Varma, OTT platform Prime Video unveiled the teaser of his upcoming drama series Matka King on Sunday, building anticipation ahead of its premiere on April 17.

Created and written by Abhay Koranne and directed by Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, the show is set in the rapidly evolving Bombay of the 1960s. It follows the journey of Brij Bhatti, portrayed by Vijay Varma, a cotton trader who pioneers a new gambling system known as “Matka,” transforming it from an elite activity into a widespread national phenomenon.

The series is jointly produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur, Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, Gargi Kulkarni, Ashwini Sidwani, and Ashish Aryan under the banners of Roy Kapur Films, Aatpat, and SMR Productions.

Alongside Vijay Varma, the show features a strong ensemble cast including Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Siddharth Jadhav, Bhupendra Jadawat, and Gulshan Grover in key roles. The supporting cast includes Vineet Kumar Singh, Bharat Jadhav, Girish Kulkarni, Jamie Lever, Kishor Kadam, Cyrus Sahukar, Arpita Sethia, Sambhaji Tangade, Ishtiyak Khan, Sanjivv Jotangia, and Simran Ashwini.

Sharing the teaser on social media, the makers captioned it with a playful line: “Pot spelt backwards is top—and that is where a king belongs.”

Speaking about the series, Nikhil Madhok described Matka King as a compelling tale of ambition and transformation, blending intrigue with a cautionary edge. Co-producer Siddharth Roy Kapur added that the project stood out for its unique setting and its exploration of identity, ambition, and the pursuit of respect in a changing society.
