Mumbai, Mar 28: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday issued a firm warning against the spread of false information regarding fuel shortages or a potential lockdown, reassuring the public that no such measures are planned.
“There is absolutely no plan for a lockdown,” Fadnavis said, emphasizing that India is well-prepared to manage the ongoing global fuel situation. He criticized individuals deliberately creating confusion and panic, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has instructed states to take strict action against those spreading rumours. “Spreading false news in these sensitive times is against the nation’s interests, and we will deal with it with an iron hand,” the Chief Minister stated.

To strengthen the state’s energy resilience, Fadnavis highlighted measures to expand Piped Natural Gas (PNG) supply. He noted that a recent Government Resolution relaxes conditions for laying gas pipelines across municipal corporations, allowing urban households to shift from LPG to PNG and ensuring more efficient management of energy reserves during international crises.
Fadnavis also underscored India’s preparedness in the face of global disruptions, citing a virtual meeting chaired by Prime Minister Modi with all state Chief Ministers on Friday to discuss the impact of the Iran–Israel conflict on the economy and energy security. Praising the Prime Minister’s leadership, the CM noted that while many countries are struggling with fuel shortages and implementing measures like reduced workweeks or mandatory remote work, India has avoided a crisis.
He further explained that the central government has absorbed the burden of rising international fuel prices, preventing costs from being passed to consumers. Domestic LPG supplies have been increased by 75 per cent, and India’s diverse import portfolio from 41 countries reduces dependency on any single volatile region. Despite restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, Fadnavis said, diplomatic efforts have ensured uninterrupted LPG supply, safeguarding households and businesses across the country.
