US to introduce Donald Trump’s signature on currency for 250th independence anniversary

Washington, Mar 27: In a historic move, the United States Department of the Treasury has announced that upcoming US paper currency will carry the signature of President Donald Trump as part of the country’s 250th Independence anniversary celebrations.

The decision marks the first time a sitting US president’s signature will appear on federal currency, breaking a long-standing tradition. For over 165 years, American banknotes have featured the signatures of the Treasury Secretary and the US Treasurer, a system in place since 1861.

Under the new plan, the Treasurer’s signature will be removed entirely—ending an unbroken practice dating back to the introduction of federal currency. The latest notes currently in circulation still bear the signatures of former Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and US Treasurer Lynn Malerba.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the move, stating that the initiative reflects the nation’s economic progress and is a fitting tribute to both the country and President Trump during the Semiquincentennial celebrations.

“There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J Trump than US dollar bills bearing his name,” Bessent said in an official statement.

US Treasurer Brandon Beach also supported the decision, calling it “appropriate” and “well deserved.”

The currency redesign is part of a broader effort to honour Trump during the 250th anniversary of American independence. Earlier this month, a federal arts commission approved a 24-karat gold commemorative coin featuring Trump’s image, which is expected to be released during the July 4 Semiquincentennial observances.
