Panaji, Mar 11: Police have arrested a 48-year-old man in connection with a drug smuggling attempt inside the Central Jail Colvale.

The accused, Fauston Alan Rawles, a resident of Arambol with links to Sawantwadi in Maharashtra, allegedly tried to supply hashish oil to a foreign prisoner through an inmate.

According to police, the incident took place on Friday around 4 pm inside the jail premises. A case was registered based on a complaint filed by the deputy superintendent of the prison, Datta Kudchadkar.

Police said the drugs were brought into the jail by Tanvi Akshay Polji Bhomkar (23), a resident of Mapusa and a native of Vante-Sattari. She had visited the prison to meet undertrial prisoner Sunil Madkaikar..

During the visit, Bhomkar allegedly attempted to hand over the contraband to Madkaikar, but prison staff caught her red-handed and seized 10 grams of hashish oil worth about Rs 10,000.

Subsequent investigations revealed that Rawles had allegedly planned to route the drugs through the female accused to reach a foreign inmate lodged in the prison.

Police said the foreign prisoner involved in the case has been identified and will also be arrested as part of the probe.

Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Ramchandra Satelkar under the supervision of Police Inspector Sanjit Kandolkar.
