History, music and memory: Mangaluru to host film, talk on Konkani identity on Mar 7-8

Media Release

Mangaluru, Feb 28: TLC Art Cafe and Susheg Jivith – Dementia Care Centre will present two landmark cultural evenings: the award-winning film Nachom-ia Kumpasar and a conversation with historian Alan Machado (Prabhu) and Jason Pinto, at TLC Art Café.

On Saturday, March 7, historian and author Alan Machado (Prabhu), joined by Jason Pinto, SDB, will lead a talk titled History and Identity at TLC Art Cafe, Mangaluru — an evening of inquiry into early Indian history, the Goan Inquisition, and the long distance between historical facts and popular narratives. The following evening, Sunday, March 8, Nachom-ia Kumpasar — the critically acclaimed Konkani film — will screen at PVR Nexus Mall, Pandeshwar, at 4 pm.

THE TALK

In this talk, Alan Machado (Prabhu) will walk the audience through the difference between historical facts and popular narratives — and explain how each has shaped understanding of the Konkani-speaking world. The new edition of Sarasvati's Children, first published 25 years ago, now includes a chapter drawing on the latest research to illuminate the River Sarasvati, the Gauda Saraswat Brahmins and the origins of Konkani identity. Slaves of Sultans deploys a vast range of sources to dismantle myths about captivity. Goa's Inquisition draws on primary archival records to present a dark chapter that is more complex than popular memory allows. Machado will also offer a preview of two new books currently in the final stages of publication.

Jason Pinto, SDB — Konkani writer and PhD researcher in Linguistics — will bring his own scholarly perspective to the conversation, engaging with questions of community and the long argument over identity that has defined coastal Karnataka and Goa for centuries.

Alan Machado's books will be available for purchase at the event, with an opportunity for author signing.

THE FILM

Set in the Goa of the 1960s and 70s, Nachom-ia Kumpasar — is a love story told against the backdrop of Goa's extraordinary musical heritage. Starring Vijay Maurya and Palomi Ghosh, the film features twenty Konkani classics by the legendary Chris Perry, and celebrates a generation of musicians whose jazz-infused rhythms quietly shaped the sound of Bollywood's Golden Era — a contribution that history has, until now, been slow to acknowledge. The film is in Konkani with English subtitles. The screening is presented as a fundraiser by Susheg Jivith – Dementia Care Centre and Silver Circle, in partnership with Music as Medicine. Seats can be booked by contacting: +91-99019 04858 or silvercircleindia@gmail.com.
