Bengaluru, Feb 22: The Karnataka government is considering a ban on mobile phone usage for students under 16, citing rising concerns over the impact of social media on young minds. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed that the proposal is under discussion and feedback is being sought from vice-chancellors of state-run universities.
“Since you are all vice-chancellors, I want your opinion. Children are becoming vulnerable to drugs. Many countries, including Australia, have considered restricting mobile phone use among students. We are reviewing this matter,” Siddaramaiah told officials.

The chief minister warned that excessive use of social media is affecting students’ behaviour, academic performance, and mental health, while increasing susceptibility to substance abuse.
To ensure responsible use of technology, the government is consulting intermediaries on artificial intelligence and social media usage, according to IT Minister Priyank Kharge, as reported by PTI.
Karnataka’s deliberations mirror discussions in other states. The Goa government is reviewing proposals to restrict platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and X for children under 16. Andhra Pradesh is also exploring strict regulations on social media use for minors, education minister Nara Lokesh said.
Authorities stress that the proposed measures aim to safeguard students’ wellbeing, reduce distractions from academics, and create a healthier, more focused learning environment.
