Mangaluru: Police arrest man for cash theft within 24 hours

Mangaluru, Feb 9: Mangaluru North police have cracked a cash theft case and arrested a person at Mannagudda junction on Sunday, February 8.

The arrested is Zakir Hussain alias Jacky (38), a resident of Kasba Bengre currently residing near Gujjarakere, Jeppu.

The incident occurred on Saturday, February 7 when Mohammed Nizamuddin sold areca nut belonging to Shridhar Alva at a shop in Bibi Alabi. Nizamuddin had kept the sale proceeds amounting to Rs 1,28,740 in the dashboard of a Tata Intra vehicle. At around 10.30 am, while he was purchasing ACP sheets at an agency on JM Road in Bunder, the cash was stolen from the dashboard. A case was subsequently registered at Mangaluru North police station.

Accused a habitual offender

A police team led by inspector Sachin Kumar and sub-inspector Sheetal Alagur intercepted the accused on Sunday. The police recovered Rs 70,000 in cash, a two-wheeler used for the crime, and a Vivo mobile phone purchased using the stolen money.

The accused was produced before the court and has been remanded to judicial custody. Investigations revealed that Hussain is a habitual offender with previous cases registered against him at Kundapur police station for a night house-theft and at Mangaluru South police station for stealing cash from an auto-rickshaw.

The operation was conducted under the guidance of the city police commissioner.
