Dubai utility services go conversational as DEWA launches support via ChatGPT

Dubai, Feb 8: For years, Dubai residents have managed electricity and water services through apps and websites. That familiar routine is now evolving, with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) making its services accessible directly through ChatGPT.

With this move, DEWA becomes the first government utility in the world to be listed on the ChatGPT Apps Directory, signalling a shift toward AI-driven, conversational public services. Officials said the initiative reflects a broader transition away from conventional digital platforms toward intelligent, dialogue-based service delivery.

Residents can now use ChatGPT to access a range of DEWA services, including bill enquiries, account information, billing assistance, and support-related queries. The integration also allows users to locate EV Green Charger stations, get directions to the nearest charging point, and find details about Customer Happiness Centres, including locations, working hours and official contact channels. DEWA said more services will be added in phases, in line with its governance, security and data privacy standards.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, DEWA’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, said the rollout is part of the authority’s “AI Integration and Operating Services” initiative, which aims to embed government services within global AI platforms rather than limiting them to standalone websites and apps.

According to Al Tayer, integrating DEWA with ChatGPT enables customers to interact through natural language and advanced multi-agent AI systems, making services more proactive, resilient and secure. He added that the move supports Dubai’s wider ambition to emerge as a global hub for artificial intelligence and sustainable innovation.

DEWA noted that it is steadily progressing toward its goal of becoming the world’s first AI-native utility, adapting to changing customer habits as AI platforms increasingly become the preferred gateway for information and services.

The launch comes amid surging AI adoption across the UAE. OpenAI has previously reported that its user base in the country tripled year-on-year, with usage especially high among younger residents—around 60 per cent of users aged 18 to 24 and nearly half of those aged 25 to 34 accessing ChatGPT on a weekly basis.
