Margao, Feb 5: After remaining uncultivated for nearly four years due to silt accumulation and related issues, paddy fields in Raia are set for revival as local farmers step up efforts to bring the land back under cultivation.
De-silting work across the sprawling fields, owned by around 18 farmers, is nearing completion. The initiative was taken up with support from Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, who facilitated the required permissions from the Salcete Mamlatdar and other concerned authorities.

With de-silting almost complete, the farmers are now hopeful that further assistance will be extended to plough the fields using mechanised methods, enabling timely cultivation.
Chairman of the Farmers Association, Joao Vaz, speaking to the media after an inspection of the fields along with the MLA, said the association took the initiative to revive the fields after years of neglect. “With the de-silting work done, we are planning to cultivate the Korgut variety of rice in the coming season. After collecting Form I and XIV from the farmers, the fields will be ploughed collectively. Even if some farmers are unable or unwilling to cultivate their land, the association will take responsibility and cultivate the fields on their behalf,” Vaz said.
MLA Reginaldo Lourenco said several issues had contributed to the fields remaining fallow over the past four years. “The Farmers Association has undertaken the revival work using its own funds. My role was limited to assisting them in securing the necessary permissions from the taluka mamlatdar,” he said.
He added that a meeting of all concerned farmers would be convened soon to finalise a clear plan of action. “With the cooperation of farmers, the fields can be revived without much difficulty. Once cultivation begins, the area will regain its greenery and become a visual treat,” the MLA said.
