Shubman Gill suggests 15-day pre-Test camps to BCCI after home series losses

Mumbai, Jan 5: Following India’s 0-2 home Test series defeat against South Africa, Test captain Shubman Gill has reportedly recommended to the BCCI that the team should have 15-day red-ball preparation camps ahead of every Test series.

Sources told The Times of India that informal meetings were held between the BCCI, selectors, and the leadership group after India suffered two whitewash defeats in home Tests within 13 months. “Gill was very clear that the team needed better preparation before a Test series. This season’s itinerary didn’t allow much time to settle. He suggested 15-day red-ball camps prior to every series,” a source said.

The schedule has been challenging for the team, with players joining from white-ball tours. India faced West Indies in a Test on October 2, arriving just four days after the Asia Cup, and many Test specialists joined from Australia four days before the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata.

The BCCI is reportedly willing to give Gill greater input in planning. “Gill is presenting his vision with clarity. It’s a positive sign for Indian cricket, as a strong captain is needed post-Rohit Sharma. The Test and ODI teams are his, and he should have a bigger say,” the source added.

However, India’s congested cricket calendar may make 15-day camps difficult. The BCCI may leverage its Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, with coaching staff including VVS Laxman organising red-ball camps, especially when white-ball coaches like Gautam Gambhir are occupied.
