Israeli strikes reported in Gaza despite ceasefire

Gaza, Jan 5: Israeli forces have carried out fresh attacks in parts of the Gaza Strip that are outside their direct military control, despite a ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States in October, reports said.

At least three Palestinians were killed on Sunday in separate Israeli attacks in the Khan Younis area, medical sources told Al Jazeera. The victims reportedly included a 15-year-old boy, a fisherman and another man who was shot dead east of Khan Younis.

In central Gaza, several people were injured after Israeli fire east of the Bureij refugee camp. In the northern part of the enclave, Israeli forces continued demolishing homes and civilian infrastructure in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighbourhood, which has already suffered extensive damage during the conflict.

The Israeli army confirmed that it was destroying additional infrastructure in northern Gaza, stating that the operations were aimed at “terrorist infrastructure above and below ground,” including tunnels in the Beit Lahiya area.

Reports also said Israeli drones dropped explosives on several houses in eastern Gaza City, while the Shujayea and Zeitoun neighbourhoods were hit by artillery shelling. Both areas have witnessed heavy bombardment since the war began.

According to figures released by Gaza’s Ministry of Health, at least 71,386 Palestinians have been killed and 171,264 injured since the conflict erupted in October 2023. The ministry said at least 420 people have been killed since the ceasefire agreement was signed less than three months ago.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military continues to restrict the entry of a significant portion of international humanitarian aid at Gaza’s borders. Israel maintains that there is no shortage of aid, a claim disputed by the United Nations and humanitarian agencies operating on the ground.

Israel has also moved to bar several international aid organisations from operating in Gaza, including Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and the Norwegian Refugee Council, further complicating relief efforts in the war-hit enclave.
