New Delhi, Sep 11: Spanish sensation Lamine Yamal continued to impress as several European heavyweights began their 2026-27 Champions League campaigns with victories.
Yamal scored and provided two assists as Barcelona defeated Feyenoord 5-1 in their Champions League opener. Paris Saint-Germain occupy the top spot in the 36-team table after Matchweek 1, while Bayern Munich registered a 5-0 win over Bodo/Glimt.
Manchester United, returning to the Champions League after a two-year absence, also made a winning start, defeating debutants Sabah 4-0.
Here are some of the notable statistics from the opening matchweek of Europe's premier club competition.
Yamal has broken Kylian Mbappe's record for the most goal contributions by a teenager in Champions League history after scoring once and setting up two goals against Feyenoord.
The 19-year-old now has 23 Champions League goal contributions, comprising 12 goals and 11 assists. Mbappe had registered 20 goal contributions as a teenager.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich have become only the second club in Champions League history to reach 900 goals in the competition. They achieved the landmark during their 5-0 victory over Bodo/Glimt and now have 904 goals, behind only Real Madrid's 1,139.
Harry Kane's impressive scoring run in the Champions League also continued. The England international scored once in Bayern's 5-0 victory and has now found the net in eight consecutive Champions League matches.
Kane has become only the fourth player to score in eight or more successive Champions League games. Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski have achieved the feat twice each, while Ruud van Nistelrooy has also accomplished it.
Azerbaijani club Sabah made their Champions League debut against Manchester United and suffered a 4-0 defeat. However, they created a unique record by becoming the first team to name a starting XI comprising players from 11 different nationalities in their first Champions League match.
Real Madrid also began their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan, with Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde scoring for the Spanish giants.
Although Real Madrid were not at their best, Mbappe's goal saw him move level with Raul Gonzalez as the joint fifth-highest scorer in Champions League history. The French forward has now scored 60 goals in the competition.
Mbappe trails only Cristiano Ronaldo, who leads the all-time list with 140 goals, followed by Lionel Messi with 129, Robert Lewandowski with 109 and Karim Benzema with 90.
The opening matchweek thus produced several landmark achievements as the European giants got their Champions League campaigns underway.
