RPI(A) to contest 20 seats in BMC polls, backs Mahayuti

Mumbai, Jan 3: Union minister and Republican Party of India (Athawale) chief Ramdas Athawale on Friday announced that his party will contest 20 seats in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections scheduled for January 15, while continuing to remain part of the ruling Mahayuti alliance.

Speaking to a news agency, Athawale said the RPI(A) will support Mahayuti candidates on the remaining 207 seats. His statement comes days after he accused the ruling alliance of “betrayal” over the party’s exclusion from the Mahayuti’s formal seat-sharing arrangement for the BMC polls.

Athawale said Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis informed him that the Mahayuti faced difficulties in accommodating RPI(A) in the BMC seat-sharing formula, but assured him of a seat in the Maharashtra Legislative Council.

“Mumbai’s mayor should be from the Mahayuti. We are contesting on 20 seats and will support BJP and Shiv Sena candidates on the remaining seats. We are with the Mahayuti, though on some seats we are contesting separately,” Athawale said.

He added that his party has decided to stay with the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP to ensure the formation of a Mahayuti mayor in Mumbai.

Polling for the 227-member BMC will be held on January 15 along with elections to other municipal corporations across Maharashtra, with results to be declared on January 16 by the State Election Commission.

Under the Mahayuti seat-sharing agreement, the BJP is contesting 137 seats, while the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena is fielding candidates on 90 seats. The BJP has already won some seats unopposed. Riding on its recent performance in nagar panchayat and municipal council elections, the Mahayuti is aiming for a strong showing in the civic polls.

The opposition, meanwhile, remains divided. Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) has allied with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), a move criticised by the Congress. Talks between the Congress and Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi have also hit a roadblock over seat-sharing.
