Chennai, Dec 14: Hosts India created history on Sunday by winning the Squash World Cup for the first time, defeating top-seeded Hong Kong, China 3–0 in a one-sided final at Express Avenue Mall.

The triumph marked a major milestone for Indian squash, making India only the fifth country to secure a major World Squash team championship, joining an elite group that includes Australia, Egypt, England and Pakistan.

Buoyed by strong home support, the Indian mixed team delivered a flawless performance in the final, putting behind their semi-final disappointment at the 2023 edition held on the same court.

Veteran Joshna Chinappa set India on the path to victory by overcoming higher-ranked Ka Yi Lee in four games. The Chennai stalwart showed her experience and control, winning 7-3, 2-7, 7-5, 7-1 to give India the early lead.

Abhay Singh then strengthened India’s position with an authoritative display against Alex Lau. Playing with confidence and precision, the Chennai-born player wrapped up a straight-games win, 7-1, 7-4, 7-4, in just 19 minutes.

Seventeen-year-old Anahat Singh sealed the title in style, outclassing Tomato Ho 7-2, 7-2, 7-5. Showing maturity beyond her years, the young Delhi player rose to the occasion to script India’s historic triumph.

Reflecting on the achievement, Joshna Chinappa said playing in front of a home crowd in Chennai made the victory even more special and thanked fans for their unwavering support. Abhay Singh described the evening as unforgettable, saying winning in his home city with his teammates was a dream come true.

He added that the victory would inspire young players across the country, encouraging them to stay disciplined and committed to the sport.
