Shivamogga, Dec 5: A pall of gloom has descended upon Ashwathnagar here following the shocking double suicide of an eminent gynaecologist and her son, who were found hanging in their residence on Friday, December 5.
The deceased have been identified as Dr Jayashree (aged 55 or 57), a well-known obstetrician who ran a maternity hospital and her son, Akash, aged about 32.
Dr. Jayashree was discovered on the ground floor, while Akash was found hanging on the first floor of the house. The police suspect they ended their lives late on December 4, as their rooms remained locked until the afternoon of December 5.

One report suggests that an argument occurred between the mother and son late on Thursday night. Dr Jayashree reportedly left a death note and subsequently transferred her property to the names of her son and daughter-in-law before taking her own life, with Akash following suit.
Akash's second wife, who was in a different room in the same house, informed the police about the incident.
This incident is tragically the third suicide within the family in the same house in recent years: Akash's first wife, Navyashree, had ended her life by hanging approximately one and a half to three years ago. This previous tragedy had left both Dr Jayashree and Akash deeply traumatised.
In an attempt to cope with the grief, Akash had remarried in May 2025, just six months prior to the incident. While the precise motive behind the mother and son's suicide remains unclear, the combined shock and grief from the previous incident are suspected to be a major contributing factor.
The Vinoba Nagar police have registered a case of unnatural death and is currently investigating the matter, having visited and inspected the scene.
