Mumbai, Dec 5: Tension prevailed outside a prominent educational institution in Goregaon on Thursday after six female students were booked by the police for staging a protest against the college’s decision to ban burqas and niqabs inside classrooms.

According to police sources, the incident took place at Vivek Vidyalaya and Junior College where the management recently implemented a new dress code restricting face-covering attire on campus. The move sparked strong opposition from a group of students who reportedly sat on a hunger strike outside the college premises.

Police officials said the protest was carried out without prior permission, leading to action against the agitators. “They were demonstrating on the road and refused to disperse when requested. They also argued with our personnel,” an officer informed.

A case has been registered against six female students, including three whose identities are yet to be confirmed, under charges of unlawful assembly.

Meanwhile, a video of the protest quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing public attention and igniting fresh debate over dress codes and religious freedoms in educational spaces.

Further investigations are underway, and officials said they are keeping a close watch on the situation to avoid escalation of tensions in the area.
