Kundapur, Nov 26: Journalists must work with enthusiasm and dedication, said district and state award-winning journalist Lakshmi Machchina, emphasising that without passion, indifference sets in and “we are half dead.” She added that only by reporting news immediately and proactively can journalists maintain credibility and stay relevant in the field.

Machchina spoke during a felicitation ceremony organised by the Kundapura Taluk Working Journalists’ Association at the R N Shetty Auditorium, Bhandarkars College, Kundapura on Monday, where she was honoured for her contributions to journalism.

“Societal change is possible through journalism. The journalists’ association feels like a home. Moments like these, organised by fellow journalists, are priceless. The affection shown by journalists has left me both speechless and amazed,” Machchina said.

She acknowledged the many deserving colleagues who had devoted their lives to journalism and humbly remarked that she felt “stooped before them.” She lauded the unity of the Kundapura Journalists’ Association, saying such cohesion is rare and easily broken elsewhere.

Machchina, known for her inclusive approach, lives by the philosophy: accept life as it comes and make the best of it. She has built her life and career around this principle, becoming a respected figure across all communities, religions and political affiliations.

In her career, she has demonstrated the ability to report comprehensively on global, national, state, and district-level political developments, while maintaining a deep connection to cultural arts. “Those who love Yakshagana can love everyone and the world itself. Passion for Yakshagana enables sustained writing and rigorous study of diverse subjects. The art form shapes a well-rounded individual. Lakshmi Macchin’s receipt of the district and state award truly adds value to the honour,” said B Kishore Kumar, president of Kalakshetra, Kundapura.

The event was presided over by Nagaraja Rayappanamatha, president of the Kundapura Taluk Working Journalists’ Association. Journalist John D’Souza delivered a felicitation speech.

Also present were S Subrahmanya Bhat (Suji Kurya), president of the Udupi District Working Journalists’ Association, Dr Shubhakara Acharya, principal of Bhandarkars College, U S Shenai, member of Karnataka Media Academy, and Najir Polya, general secretary of the District Working Journalists’ Association.

During the occasion, S Subrahmanya Bhat, Najir Polya, newly elected secretary T Lokesh Acharya Tekkatte, and newly appointed executive committee members B Raghavendra Pai Gangolli, Chandrama Talluru and Yogish Kumbhasi were also felicitated.

The ceremony included a welcome by vice-president B Raghavendra Pai, reading of the felicitation letter by journalist Prashant Pade, management of the programme by journalist Srikant Hemmadi, and a vote of thanks by general secretary Ganesh S Beejadi.
