Medina, Nov 17: In a horrific tragedy near Medina, at least 42 Umrah pilgrims are feared dead after a bus travelling from Macca to Madina collided with a diesel tanker and went up in flames in the early hours of Sunday. Local Saudi media reported that many of the victims are believed to be Indian nationals, most of them from Hyderabad, Telangana.

The crash occurred around 1.30 am IST near Mufrihat, when several passengers were reportedly asleep. According to reports, the sudden blaze left them little chance to escape. Gulf News noted that the victims include 11 women and 10 children, though officials are still confirming exact numbers.

The Telangana government said it is in constant touch with the Indian Embassy in Riyadh. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has directed officials in New Delhi to coordinate closely with embassy authorities.

Owaisi seeks repatriation

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said 42 Umrah pilgrims were on the bus when it caught fire. He said he is in touch with Abu Mathen George, Deputy Chief of Mission, who assured that efforts are underway to gather full details.

Reports say at least 16 pilgrims who had travelled through Hyderabad-based agencies Al-Meena Hajj and Umrah Travels are among those feared dead. Owaisi urged the Centre to bring the bodies back and ensure proper treatment for the injured.

Jaishankar expresses shock

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said he was “deeply shocked” by the accident involving Indian nationals.

“Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are giving fullest support to Indian nationals and families affected. Sincere condolences to the bereaved families. Pray for the speedy recovery of those injured,” he posted on X.
