Bengaluru, Nov 9: The 12th annual ‘Drivers’ Day celebration’ was held on November 9 at Shalini Playground, 5th Block, Jayanagar, to mark the birthday of legendary actor Dr Shankar Nag.

The event, organised by various auto drivers’ associations, was attended by thousands of drivers and dignitaries, with Adichunchanagiri Math’s Shri Dr Nirmalanandanath Swamiji presiding over the ceremony.

Peace Auto and Taxi Drivers’ Union president Raghu N Narayan Gowda said the celebration was graced by transport minister Ramalinga Reddy, former deputy chief minister Dr C N Ashwath Narayan, transport commissioner A M Yogesh, and DGP Dr M A Saleem. He added that popular actress Rachita Ram had been chosen as the ‘Auto Ambassador’ for this year’s festivities.

Gowda said the birthday of Shankar Nag was celebrated in grand style by the auto driver community, with seven exemplary drivers, including senior and female drivers, being honoured with gold medals for their dedicated service. “Through this, we aim to encourage and motivate honest drivers,” he said.

Adarsha Auto and Taxi Drivers’ Union president M Manjunath Gowda noted that nearly 4,000 drivers attended the event, receiving uniforms as part of the celebration. Actor Ajay Rao also contributed financial assistance to two deserving drivers, he said.

B Pack member Raghavendra Poojari emphasised the importance of government recognition, stating that without auto and taxi drivers, the transport system could not function. He added that the annual Drivers’ Day should be officially organised by the government and formally declared as ‘Drivers’ Day’. “During this year’s celebration, all drivers paid respects to the legendary Vishnuvardhan in tribute,” he said.

In a visual highlight, autos were decorated like the famous ‘Hampi Ratha’ and carried photographs of Shankar Nag and Dr Vishnuvardhan in a parade across Bengaluru, creating a festive and vibrant atmosphere, organisers said.
