Six science-backed drinks to boost memory & brain power

New Delhi, Oct 3: When it comes to improving brain health, most people rely on green tea or coffee. But according to Dr Terry Shintani, a Harvard-trained nutritionist, several other beverages can also enhance memory, sharpen focus, and support cognitive performance. Backed by scientific studies, these drinks are proving to be powerful allies for brain health and longevity.

Beetroot juice tops the list for its rich nitrate content, which helps improve blood circulation and oxygen flow to the brain. A 2017 study in The Journals of Gerontology found that beet juice enhances cognitive performance in older adults by improving cerebral blood flow. However, those with kidney issues should consult a doctor before regular consumption.

Hibiscus tea, another brain-friendly option, contains gossypetin—a flavonoid that stimulates the brain’s microglia cells to clear beta-amyloid plaques linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Dr Shintani recommends unsweetened hibiscus tea for its neuroprotective benefits.

Turmeric tea with black pepper offers curcumin, a compound known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Research suggests that curcumin can improve memory and mood, especially in adults with mild cognitive impairment.

Kombucha, a fermented probiotic beverage, supports brain health through the gut-brain axis. The probiotics in kombucha may boost neurotransmitter production and enhance mood and mental clarity. Dr Shintani suggests opting for low-sugar versions for best results.

Green tea, a well-known brain tonic, contains catechins and L-theanine—compounds that protect neurons from oxidative stress, promote relaxation, and improve focus. A 2006 study showed that regular green tea drinkers have a lower risk of dementia.

Coffee remains a popular choice, providing caffeine and chlorogenic acid—both known for stimulating alertness and offering neuroprotective effects. Research shows that drinking two to three cups of coffee daily can reduce the risk of stroke and dementia by up to 30 percent.

Experts suggest that adding these beverages to your daily routine may enhance cognitive health and memory naturally. However, those with medical conditions should seek advice from a healthcare provider before making significant dietary changes.
