Crimes against women in Karnataka up by 40% in two years: NCRB

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Nov 3: Crimes against women in Karnataka have risen sharply by nearly 40% between 2021 and 2023, according to the latest figures released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). In 2023 alone, the state reported 20,336 such cases. Key categories included assault with intent to outrage modesty, dowry-related cases, cruelty by husband or relatives, and abduction.

Police officials and activists said the increase reflects greater awareness and willingness among women to come forward rather than a surge in actual crimes. “We are supporting women and building their confidence, which is why more victims are now filing complaints. We also ensure swift action,” a senior police officer stated.

Despite the rise in reporting, a large number of cases remain pending before courts. Compared to previous years, nearly 72,000 cases are awaiting trial across various courts, with another 16,000 added in 2023. Data also revealed that among cases disposed of in 2023, nearly 92% ended in acquittals.

Activists working closely with survivors stressed the urgent need to strengthen the system and provide stronger legal backing to women in such situations.

“This has to begin with the investigating officer. In many cases, officers fail to collect necessary evidence because they don’t take such cases seriously. In other instances, government prosecutors do not pursue them with commitment, leading to acquittals. There is a need to sensitise everyone at all levels,” said K S Vimala of the Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane.

Even in these days men think women are for the kitchen to cook for men ,clean and for bed. When oppose then they dont tolerate and will be accordingly lashed back or beaten kill. They want enjoy drink alcohol ,dont worry if wife at home has no rice to cook.Only few well educated ones respect girls/Wives.Of course many women too try to get out and will be not tolerated and kill.Sad.Govt should also take strict steps to punish men who kill women or rap and kill them.Thats not happening unfortunately.

Sujith I totally agree with your point of view! In recent times there have been multiple instances of husbands being butchered by wife, daughter, shop lifting, secret affairs, on line financial frauds, occupying hotel rooms with the partner........ but no politicization or hyperring the matter. I have come across a proverb which reads; " if required to make queue preference to ladies but in the line to be pushed to Hell, men first.😁😅

In a country where an elected representative of a state can blame a female victim of rape for walking on the streets at night, how can there be a safe environment for women. We are moving backwards in terms of morality in our country....

its very sad to see the atrocities done on women and dat too in our Karnataka ; all rakhees are just for dat day only ; DOWRY still existing is shocking ; i thought its gone. but no; men who take dowry are not MEN in real sense ; Dowry shud be abolished donno wen Men will learn to Respect Women ; agreed if there is any mistake done by the women den it can be solved in some mature way responsibly and not injuring the women or beating them ; which has become a habit of Indian Men. (those who beat their wife / gf / )

The data taken is from 2021 - 2023 when BJP was in power in Karnataka as well central, so how can we allow those people who are committing crimes against women to take over??, There's no need for it as Karnataka currently is in the safe hands of progressive secular minded educated CM Siddaramaiahji.

The Central Home Ministry has completely failed to curb crimes in UP, Bihar, and Rajasthan, where crimes against women remain among the highest in India. It seems the so-called double-engine sarkar isn’t concerned about it at all.
