India beat South Africa, clinch maiden Women’s World Cup title

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai

Mumbai, Nov 3: In a landmark moment for Indian women’s cricket, the India women's national cricket team triumphed over the South Africa women's national cricket team by 52 runs in the final of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, securing their first-ever 50-over World Cup title.

Batting first, India posted a formidable total of 298 for 7, riding on a blazing inning of 87 by Shafali Verma and a steady 58 by Deepti Sharma. In response, South Africa were bowled out for 246, with India’s bowlers delivering under pressure to seal the win.

Shafali Verma set the tone with her explosive batting and also contributed with key wickets, earning the Player of the Match award in the final.

Deepti Sharma delivered an all-round masterclass: her half-century with the bat and a five-wicket haul with the ball proved decisive. She finished the tournament with 22 wickets and 215 runs, earning the Player of the Tournament honours.

South Africa’s captain Laura Wolvaardt scored a magnificent 101 in the final, becoming the highest run-scorer in a single edition of the tournament, though it wasn’t enough to stop India.

Prior to this win, India had reached the final of the Women’s World Cup twice (2005 and 2017) but had fallen short.

In the 2025 edition, they overcame early setbacks and produced a remarkable recovery in the knock-out phase, culminating in the final triumph.

Winning the World Cup could transform women’s cricket in India, just as the 1983 victory revolutionized men’s cricket. India was considered one of the weaker teams until that historic win, which changed everything. The WPL is another great opportunity to uplift the game, as financial incentives will attract more young girls to take up cricket. Congratulations to the Indian Women’s Team on their fabulous victory, wishing them continued success and many more wins ahead!

Historic. This will change women’s cricket in India as many girls get inspired. Fitness is something they need to work on. Do not forget Jemima Rodrigues’s match winning knock against Australia because the game against Australia was the hardest one.
