Yakshagana artiste and retired lecturer Shambhu Sharma Vitla passes away at 74

Vitla, Nov 1: Renowned Yakshagana artiste and retired lecturer Shambhu Sharma Vitla (74) passed away at a private hospital in Mangaluru on Friday, November 1. He is survived by his wife and son.

Hailing from Shedrampadi in Ednadu village, Kumbla, and a resident of Okethur, Vitla, he was residing in Mura, Puttur, at the time of his demise. Sharma served as an Economics lecturer for over three decades at Somwarpet, Polali Sunkadakatte, and BC Road colleges, before retiring from service.

A passionate lover of Yakshagana since the age of 14, he devoted over five decades to the traditional art form, earning fame as a versatile artiste and interpreter on stage. Known for his fearless and expressive performances, he shared the stage with several Yakshagana stalwarts, including Deraje Sheni, Samagadvayaru, and Perla Panditaru.

Shambhu Sharma was celebrated for his commanding portrayals across various roles be it supporting characters, heroes, villains, or female roles leaving an indelible mark on the Yakshagana stage.

In recognition of his immense contribution to the art, he was honoured with numerous awards, including the Karnataka Yakshagana Academy’s Kalashree Award, Yakshagana Kalaranga Award, and the Sheni Birth Centenary Award.

His passing marks the end of an era in Yakshagana, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire generations of artistes.
