Priyamani questions ‘Pan-India’ tag, says ‘We’re All Indian Actors’

Mumbai, Oct 31: Actress Priyamani has voiced her disapproval of the growing trend of labelling performers as ‘pan-India actors,’ stating that the term unnecessarily divides the film industry.

In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Priyamani said, “I think we should stop using the term pan-India. We’re all Indian at the end of the day. What is this pan-India? You get work in other industries, and that’s a good thing — but you don’t call someone a ‘regional actor’ when they come from Bollywood to the South. For years, actors from both sides have worked across languages. Why are we suddenly labelling people now?”

The actress praised veterans such as Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Prakash Raj, and Dhanush, who have long worked across multiple industries without being categorised. “They were simply known as Indian actors. It doesn’t matter which language we work in — accept us for who we are and for the characters we play. This sudden trend of using the term is funny,” she added.

Speaking about the changing audience mindset, Priyamani noted that viewers have become more vocal and sensitive about films and performances. “It’s okay to have opinions, but don’t overanalyze or try to influence others. So many people put in hard work — just appreciate that. What may work for you may not work for me, and that’s okay,” she said.

Urging audiences to be more open-minded, the actress added, “You can criticize a film, but don’t over-criticize or over-analyze it. Don’t make it about red flags or Gen Z trends. It’s just a film! It doesn’t always have to reflect today’s world. The filmmaker has a vision, and it may or may not resonate with you — and that’s perfectly fine.”
