Mangaluru, Oct 28: Kalakul, the only Konkani repertory, held its 2024–25 theatre diploma graduation ceremony at Kalangann, Shaktinagar, on October 26. Retired principal of Government First Grade Women’s College, Puttur, Xavier D’Souza, who was the chief guest, awarded diplomas to seven graduating students.
Speaking on the occasion, D’Souza said, “Theatre is an educational medium that demands both creativity and discipline. A director must provide a clear vision to make this medium impactful. When we think beyond boundaries, we discover new possibilities and innovation. At a time when many young people are preoccupied with bars, pubs, and mobile phones, you have chosen to dedicate a year to learning theatre — I wish you all the best for your future.”

Mandd Sobhann president Louis Pinto presided over the ceremony and congratulated the graduates, urging them to contribute actively to the growth of Konkani theatre.
Trainer Vikas presented the annual report, followed by reflections from the graduating students who shared their learning experiences. Kalakul administrator Arun Raj Rodrigues compered the event.
Established in 2011 by Mandd Sobhann, Kalakul is a unique Konkani theatre repertory that provides comprehensive training to 7–10 students each year, along with a learning stipend. The programme includes training in both traditional and modern theatre. The students stage around four full-length plays, several street plays, and class productions annually. Today, many Kalakul alumni are making their mark in theatre both in India and abroad.
