Australia beats India in rain-shortened ODI; Shubman Gill reflects on powerplay woes

Adelaide, Oct 19: India captain Shubman Gill expressed disappointment after his team lost the first ODI against Australia by seven wickets in a rain-shortened encounter, ending India’s eight-match winning streak in 2025.

India’s innings suffered early blows as three crucial wickets, including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, fell during the powerplay, leaving the team struggling at 25/3 in the ninth over. Gill noted, “Never easy, when you lose three wickets in the powerplay, you're always trying to play catch up. There were a lot of learnings and positives as well.” The combined stay of Kohli and Sharma lasted only 22 balls.

Despite the setbacks, India put up a fight while defending a modest total of 130 in 26 overs. “Defending 130 in 26 odd overs, we took the game pretty deep so we're satisfied with that,” Gill added. He also thanked fans for their unwavering support throughout the white-ball tour, hoping for continued backing in Adelaide.

Australia, chasing the DLS-adjusted target, was led to victory by captain Mitchell Marsh, who remained unbeaten on 46 with 29 balls to spare. Marsh praised the home crowd and the composure of his young players. “It was swinging around a little bit. Proud of the way our young guys came out and took the game on and got us over,” he said.

Josh Philippe, making his third ODI appearance, contributed 37 runs off 29 balls, sharing a crucial 55-run partnership with Marsh. “(He) came out and made it look very easy. It’s fun to get young guys coming in… you just want them to have fun and enjoy it,” Marsh remarked.

The loss sets the stage for India’s comeback in the next ODI, with Gill and his team looking to rectify the early wickets’ impact and regain momentum in the series.
