Malcolm Brogdon abruptly retires from NBA after nine seasons

New York, Oct 16: Veteran NBA guard Malcolm Brogdon has announced his retirement from professional basketball, ending a nine-season career that included stints with the Bucks, Pacers, Celtics, Trail Blazers, Wizards, and most recently, the New York Knicks. The 32-year-old, who was a second-round pick (36th overall) in the 2016 NBA Draft, informed Knicks officials of his decision on Wednesday, just before the regular season.

Brogdon, the 2017 NBA Rookie of the Year and 2023 Sixth Man of the Year, had been competing for a roster spot with Landry Shamet and Garrison Mathews. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the news, noting Brogdon’s choice to retire came unexpectedly, leaving the Knicks without a reliable second option at point guard behind Jalen Brunson.

In a statement to ESPN, Brogdon said:

"Today, I officially begin my transition out of my basketball career… I have proudly given my mind, body, and spirit to the game over the last few decades. With the many sacrifices it took to get here, I have received many rewards… I am deeply grateful to have arrived to this point on my own terms and now to be able to reap the benefits of my career with my family and friends. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have had a place in my journey."

Over his career, Brogdon averaged 15.3 points, 4.7 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game in 29.1 minutes, demonstrating versatility as both a scorer and playmaker. In his final season with the Washington Wizards, he recorded 12.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.

Brogdon’s unexpected retirement marks the end of a decorated NBA journey, highlighted by individual accolades and contributions to multiple teams, and leaves the Knicks seeking a solution at the guard position as the season begins.
