Stoppage-time own goal rescues Leicester in 1-1 draw at West Brom

Birmingham, Sep 27: Leicester City salvaged a last-gasp 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion on Friday thanks to an own goal by Nat Phillips deep into stoppage time at the Hawthorns.

West Brom opened the scoring in the 10th minute through Samuel Iling-Junior, who netted his first goal since joining on loan from Aston Villa. Aune Heggebo flicked the ball to the England Under-21 international, who deftly maneuvered past multiple defenders before slotting the ball past the advancing Jakub Stolarczyk.

Leicester pressed for an equaliser but struggled to break down the Baggies’ defence. West Brom came close to doubling their lead, with substitute Josh Maja seeing one effort blocked by Wout Faes and another blasted over the bar in stoppage time.

The deadlock was finally broken three minutes into added time when Abdul Fatawu sent a hopeful ball into the box, forcing Phillips to turn it into his own net.

“The more we chased a result, the more emotional it was,” Leicester manager Marti Cifuentes told Sky Sports. “In an open situation, we were chasing what we wanted, to get at least one point from this game.”

The draw extends Leicester’s unbeaten run to five matches, lifting them into third place behind Middlesbrough and Stoke City. West Brom sit just a point behind in sixth.

West Brom coach Ryan Mason expressed frustration after the match: “I am bitterly disappointed. We need to punish teams and kill the game off. We played really well, limited them, created chances. I thought we were the better team and should have won the game.”
