Dubai police warn public against rising online consumer protection scam

Dubai, Sep 27: The Anti-Fraud Department of Dubai Police has issued an urgent alert about a growing online scam targeting users searching for consumer protection platforms. Fraudsters are creating fake websites and using social media and search engines to lure victims, ultimately gaining access to their mobile devices and bank accounts.

According to Dubai Police, victims searching for legitimate complaint portals may be tricked into providing personal information such as names, emails, phone numbers, and complaint details on fraudulent websites. Scammers then contact the victims, posing as officials, and instruct them to install remote access software while logging into their bank accounts. This allows fraudsters to monitor devices in real time, steal banking credentials, and execute unauthorized transactions.

The police highlighted that these remote access programs are specifically designed to mirror the victim’s device, giving scammers complete control over confidential information.

Authorities have urged the public to:

• Use only official consumer protection channels.
• Avoid downloading suspicious applications.
• Never share banking or personal information with unverified parties.
• Report suspicious activity immediately through the eCrime platform or by calling 901.

The Anti-Fraud Department, part of the General Department of Criminal Investigation, has over the past decade developed advanced capabilities to combat financial crimes, including cyber fraud, identity theft, and money laundering. The department uses forensic technology, biometric tools, and international cooperation to investigate and dismantle complex scams.

Dubai Police emphasized their commitment to safeguarding citizens and businesses from emerging threats, including AI-assisted fraud and fake online businesses, while encouraging prompt reporting to prevent financial losses.
