Thane, Sep 20: The long-cherished dream of a metro for Thane is finally turning into reality. The trial run of the Thane Metro 4A line will be held on Monday, September 22, coinciding with Ghatsthapana, in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is building the 32.3-km Wadala–Thane–Kasarvadavali Metro-4 corridor, with an extension up to Gaimukh (Metro 4A). The 10.5-km stretch from Cadbury Junction to Gaimukh is nearly complete and expected to open to passengers by year-end after safety clearances.
Transport Minister and Thane MLA Pratap Sarnaik recalled years of efforts: “In 2014 we presented a replica of the metro to CM Fadnavis. Today Thanekars are finally seeing this metro running.” Deputy CM Eknath Shinde added, “Twenty years ago, we protested for a Thane metro. That struggle has borne fruit.”
The new line is expected to ease heavy traffic on Ghodbunder Road, offering comfortable and faster travel for commuters. Ten stations are part of the first trial run: Cadbury, Majiwada, Kapoorbawadi, Manpada, Tikuji-ni-wadi, Dongri Pada, Vijay Garden, Kasarvadavali, Gavanpada, and Gaimukh.
The Green Line 4A extension is 90% complete and slated for commissioning by the end of 2025, with the remaining Metro-4 phases to Wadala set for completion in stages through 2027.
