Mumbai, Sept 15: Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat has officially assumed additional responsibilities as the Governor of Maharashtra, following the departure of C.P. Radhakrishnan, who was recently elected Vice President of India.
Devvrat was sworn in during a formal ceremony held at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai on Monday. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Justice Chandrashekhar. Notably, Devvrat took his oath in Sanskrit. The event was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, cabinet ministers, senior bureaucrats, and other dignitaries.

The appointment was confirmed by a press release from the President of India’s office on September 11, which stated:
“Consequent upon demitting the office of the Governor of Maharashtra CP Radhakrishnan due to his election as the Vice-President of India, the President of India has appointed Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Gujarat, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Maharashtra, in addition to his own duties.”
Devvrat and his wife Darshana Devi arrived in Mumbai from Ahmedabad via the Tejas Express on Sunday.
With a distinguished career spanning over 45 years in education and public administration, Devvrat brings a wealth of experience to his expanded role. He previously served as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh from August 2015 to July 2019. During his tenure there, he actively championed initiatives such as natural farming, cow protection, the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign, and several social and environmental causes including water conservation, tree plantation, and addiction eradication.
Appointed as Gujarat’s governor in July 2019, Devvrat has played a key role in promoting natural farming across the state, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. Under his leadership, more than 5 lakh farmers in Gujarat have transitioned from chemical-intensive agriculture to natural farming practices—a model now gaining traction in several other states.
With his dual charge, Acharya Devvrat is expected to bring the same commitment and holistic approach to governance in Maharashtra.
