Rajgir, Sep 7: Team India etched another golden chapter in their hockey history by defeating South Korea 4-1 in a dominant final to claim their fourth Men’s Hockey Asia Cup title on Sunday in Rajgir, Bihar. The emphatic victory ended an eight-year wait for continental glory and also sealed India’s place in the 2026 FIH Men’s World Cup, to be co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands.
Ruthless India Outplay Korea in the Final
India came out with intent from the opening whistle. Sukhjeet Singh opened the scoring, followed by a fine double from Dilpreet Singh, and Amit Rohidas added a fourth to seal the contest. South Korea's Son Dain netted a late consolation in the final quarter, but it was far too little, too late for the defending champions.
India could have added to their tally, but Jugraj Singh’s penalty stroke was denied by the Korean keeper, preventing a further dent to the scoreline.

Super 4s: Momentum in India’s Favour
India stormed into the final on the back of a 7-0 demolition of China in the Super 4 stage – a match that showcased their attacking firepower. Goals from Abhishek (2), Shilanand Lakra, Dilpreet, Mandeep Singh, Raj Kumar Pal, and Sukhjeet Singh overwhelmed the Chinese defence.
Earlier in the Super 4s, India had also defeated Malaysia 4-1 and played out a 2-2 draw with South Korea, whom they would ultimately overcome in the final.
Undefeated Run Under Harmanpreet’s Leadership
Captain Harmanpreet Singh led from the front as India maintained an undefeated run throughout the tournament, registering five wins and one draw. In the group stage, India posted three consecutive victories, setting the tone for a title charge.
Asia Cup Success: A Growing Legacy
With this win, India adds another feather to their Asia Cup crown collection, having previously lifted the trophy in 2003, 2007, and 2017. South Korea, despite the loss, still remains the most successful team in the tournament’s history, with five titles – won in 1994, 1999, 2009, 2013, and 2022.
Eyes on World Cup 2026
With this victory, India officially qualifies for the 2026 Hockey World Cup, scheduled from August 14 to 30 in Belgium and the Netherlands. The focus now shifts to improving on past performances at the global stage.
India’s best World Cup result came 50 years ago, when they won the title in 1975. Since then, their top finishes have been fifth place in 1982 and 1994. Having played in all 15 editions so far, including the latest one held in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela in 2023, India will now aim to return to the World Cup podium after a long wait.
