Mumbai, Sep 4: Tensions within the ruling Mahayuti alliance came to the fore on Wednesday after NCP leader and OBC minister Chhagan Bhujbal boycotted the Maharashtra cabinet meeting, expressing strong opposition to the government resolution (GR) issued to pacify activist Manoj Jarange’s Maratha quota protest.
In view of rising OBC unrest across the state, the cabinet decided to form a sub-committee on OBC issues, headed by BJP leader and revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule. The committee will comprise four BJP members and two each from Shiv Sena and NCP, including Bhujbal.
Speaking to reporters, Bhujbal said, “Certain words in the GR have created doubts among OBC groups. I am consulting legal experts. If necessary, we will approach the high court or supreme court in the coming days.” He appealed to OBC groups to remain patient and avoid public protests.
The controversial GR allows village-level committees to issue Kunbi certificates to Marathas if their ancestors are listed in the Hyderabad gazette. It also states that affidavits or testimonies from relatives, clan members, or villagers already holding certificates can be considered as proof.
Criticising this, Bhujbal said, “This is wrong. A committee has no right to change anyone’s caste. The GR speaks of changing Marathas to Kunbi without mentioning ‘eligible Marathas’. How can an affidavit from someone in the village or clan be considered proof? What if people are paid to give affidavits?
Bhujbal’s stand puts him at odds with his own party, NCP led by deputy CM Ajit Pawar, which draws significant support from the Maratha community.
Jarange, however, welcomed the GR, saying, “The fact that Bhujbal is upset means the resolution is strong. Some people are angry because they were not consulted.”
