Kaup, Aug 24: A 70-year-old pedestrian was killed after being struck by a fast-moving car while waiting to cross National Highway 66 near Koppalangadi, close to Kaup, on Sunday afternoon around 3:30 pm.

The deceased has been identified as Peeru Saheb, a resident of Koppalangadi.

According to police sources, Peeru Saheb was standing at the roadside, reportedly preparing to cross the highway, when a car travelling at high speed from Mangaluru towards Udupi hit him. The impact caused severe injuries.

He was immediately assisted by the SDPI’s ambulance service and rushed to a private hospital in Udupi, but succumbed to his injuries en route.

Kaup police visited the spot soon after the incident and are conducting a detailed investigation. The identity of the driver and specifics of the vehicle involved have not yet been disclosed.

The tragic accident has renewed concerns over pedestrian safety on NH-66, particularly in semi-urban areas like Koppalangadi, where vehicles often move at high speeds and pedestrian crossings are limited or poorly marked.
