New Delhi, Aug 21: Former Indian Army chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane has said China is likely to remain India’s principal long-term competitor across multiple sectors, even as Pakistan continues to draw New Delhi’s attention due to the threat of terrorism.
Naravane made the remarks on Thursday at the launch of his new book, The Curious and the Classified: Unearthing Military Myths and Mysteries, published by Rupa Publications, in Pune, Maharashtra.

Speaking about India’s relations with its two neighbours, Naravane said Pakistan and China present different challenges. While India has fought wars with both countries and continues to face unsettled borders, he described China as a competitor rather than an enemy.
According to the former Army chief, Pakistan remains a security concern because of its continued support for terrorism, keeping India focused on its western border. However, he said China would be the country’s main competitor in the years ahead.
Naravane said the competition between India and China could extend across several areas, including politics, economics, trade and military affairs. At the same time, he stressed the importance of resolving bilateral differences through dialogue and diplomatic channels.
He also underlined the need for India to maintain strong military preparedness and deterrence to prevent any potential misadventure.
Naravane said the armed forces must remain ready at all times so that India can deter any attempt to use force against the country.
The former Army chief also emphasised the importance of maintaining stability in India’s neighbourhood. He said instability in neighbouring countries could have repercussions for India, including the movement of illegal goods and narcotics.
Naravane said India should therefore support efforts to ensure stability in neighbouring countries, stressing that regional peace would contribute to India’s own peace and development.
The former Army chief served as Chief of Army Staff during the 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops.
